How to prepare your Virginia Beach Roof for the winter

The weather outside is frightful. And if the warmth inside is delightful, then you have a roof to thank for that.

Just as the common cold is more prevalent in winter, so are some roof issues. So, as your local roofing contractors in Virginia Beach, let’s keep your family warm and cozy this winter!

Pre-Winter Preparation

The freeze-thaw cycle of winter can exacerbate hidden issues with your roof. So, a key to winterizing your roof before winter even comes is regular maintenance.

Gutters protect your whole home from water damage.

Clean gutters thoroughly. Otherwise, water pools and freezes, leaving cracks and leaks. One home we treated had such neglected gutters that the fallen leaves had turned into soil! Complete with rooted plants and an ant colony.

  • Remove all leaves, twigs, and debris before winter sets in.
  • Use a gutter scoop or garden trowel for thorough cleaning.
  • Ensure downspouts are clear and water can flow freely.

Additionally, we recommend installing gutter guards to prevent debris accumulation. If you’ve had foundation problems before, you should extend downspouts 3-5 feet away from your home’s foundation. That will keep water away from your home.

Inspect your roof for damage.

Cold temperatures can make some roofing materials more brittle and prone to cracking. Tile roofs, especially as they age, are especially susceptible to the freeze-thaw cycle. They are more prone to breaking in cold weather. Luckily, we offer roof repair for tile roofs. However, if you want a high-durability roof with low maintenance, then maybe look into metal roofs as your next roof replacement

  • Check for loose fasteners, cracks, and misalignments among your gutters.
  • Look for missing, cracked, or curling shingles.
  • See if there is any pooling or standing water on flat or low-angle roofs.

If you notice any of these signs or a combination of them, call your roofing company, Virginia Beach, for a prompt roof inspection.

Attic insulation and ventilation are critical to your home’s health.

Your attic plays many roles in keeping your family cozy and comfortable. Attics regulate temperature. They control moisture, preventing mold growth and structural damage. They enhance indoor air quality. In essence, the attic manages temperature and moisture, but winter weather can mess that all up.

Condensation:

When warm indoor air meets the cold roof surface, condensation can form. If left untreated, it will build up, leading to potential leaks and mold. Check your attic for:

  • Rusted nails and wet insulation.
  • Dampness or wet spots.
  • Frost on the roof surface.
  • Light penetrating through the roof boards.

Leaks:

Leaks are more common in winter due to everything we discussed above. So, be on the lookout for:

  • Water stains or discoloration on ceilings and walls.
  • Intermittent dripping sounds, especially when it warms up after freezing cold days.
  • Whistling sounds or unexpected drafts in the home.
  • Snow or ice slipping off your roof. They should slide off, but if they don’t, then that might be a sign of an ice dam. Ice dams deserve their own blog.

Misc considerations

We would be remised if we didn’t mention these winter weather concerns:

  • Snow Accumulation: Who doesn’t love snow? It’s lovely until heavy snowfall adds weight and traps moisture on your roof. If the snow doesn’t naturally melt or slide off, consider using a roof rake. It’s exactly as it sounds: a special tool to rake snow off your roof. But you’ll want to be careful with it, as you might damage the already brittle shingles.
  • Tree Limbs: Tree branches can fall on your roof during heavy storms and strong winds. So be on the lookout for dangerous branches before the next winter storm.
  • Icicles: Icicles can be a sign of poor insulation. If they stick around and don’t melt easily, then they can damage your gutters and roof over time.
  • Ladders: If you’re going to take down Christmas lights in freezing January, prioritize your safety.

If you take care of your roof, it’ll take care of you.

We know it sounds cheesy, but it’s true. See the difference a well-cared-for roof can make!
